The 'G.E.O.D.E.' weapons system is a theoretical energy weapon which exploits experimental quantum mechanics in order to create a powerful anti-ship weapon.
Gluons are subatomic gauge bosons responsible for the exchange of the strong nuclear force between the fundamental particles, quarks.
Quarks, when bound together, form protons and neutrons (as well as their anti-particles).
The strong nuclear force is what allows atoms to stay together. Without it, nuclei would fly apart due to electromagnetic repulsion.
Protons all carry a positive charge. Normally they would repel each other because of this, but because of the strong nuclear force this does not happen.
The strong force is far stronger than electromagnetism and, through the exchange of gluons, is able to allow atomic nuclei to exist.
The G.E.O.D.E. system disrupts this.
When fired in a concentrated bolt, G.E.O.D.E. can momentarily neutralise gluon activity in its area of effect. This disruption will cause the atoms to fall apart as electromagnetic repulsion forces the protons apart.
While G.E.O.D.E. has no effect on energy shields, if it strikes the hull of a vessel it will completely destroy the affected area.
G.E.O.D.E. is currently in a hypothetical state, but could be constructed if Starfleet regulations would allow for such a powerful weapon.
