With the evidence needed to prove Cade Skymaller's innocence, the USS Corax attempts to use the original experimental coaxial drive which was recovered by D'kmal's private company in the Dhank'tek System in order to cross the Cardassian Border without being caught.
However when the drive is activated and the Corax arrives back at Earth they discover that something is terribly wrong and the Corax has been transported to the 7th Century AD.
