Subject: The Sphere Builders
The Sphere Builders are a race that is not believed to be native to our galaxy due to their inability to survive in this "realm" without the aid of terraforming space with transdimensional anomalies like the ones created by the Delphic Expanse.
However, recent palentological studies show this not to be the case. The Sphere Builders were originally part of the "Preserver" race which evolved before most humanoid life in the Galaxy. The Preservers or "Ancient Humanoids" achieved interstellar transport though they found themselves alone in the premordial Milky Way Galaxy.
The lack of other life in the Galaxy was a source of great emptiness which they endevoured to fill by "seeding" complex genetic coding in the premordial seas of thousands of different worlds. As a result, the preservers are responsible for nearly all humanoid life in the current galaxy, as discovered by the USS Enterprise-D in 2368.
However there was a sect within the Preservers that did not wish to create a "legacy" for their "children" but instead became obsessed with the notion of cheating death. They seeked to live forever, attempting to find a way to transcend their mortal lifespans.
Through some unknown method they were able to achieve this but it came with limitations as they were unable to take direct action in the events of our reality and were forced to live as non-corporeal beings on a transdimensional plane of existence. It has been suggested that this sect was corrupted by an entity known as "Zero", a destructive force which almost destroyed the galaxy once before when Q unwittingly let him in, for this reason the Q Continuum erected the current "Galactic Barrier", a massive field of energy around the Milky Way Galaxy to protect life her.
However, this group of Preservers believed themselves to now be "Gods" in their own right and set about manipulating the galaxy for their own purposes. It was they who appeared to the fledging "seeded" races created by the Preservers, such as T'Kon Empire and the Iconians. They taught the Iconians to leave the physical plane of existence and exist as pure energy beings and to construct large spheres that could be concealed in subspace.
However, their interference caused the Iconians to become an arrogant and cruel empire which enslaved hundreds of worlds in the Beta Quadrant until it was finally overthrown by an alliance of other races, secretly backed by the original "Preservers" who had remained in seculsion on Lae'nas III. The Iconians were almost driven to extinction and the "Sphere Builders" had failed in their first attempt to achieve true dominion over the Galaxy.
Their second attempt, as they now transcended linear time, in the same way that some of the Preservers, originally based on Bajor had done to become to the Prophet's of the Celestial Temple, was to influence events much later in the 25th Century and attempt to grow their expanse as this was the time that they had predicted the Iconians would return to the Milky Way. In preperation for the returning Iconians who would help them to conquer the Galaxy, the Sphere Builders attempted to start terraforming space in the Alpha Quadrant however, their forces were swiftly defeated at the Battle of Proycon V by collection of races that they had helped create.
Identifying the Federation as a major threat to their new order, they attempted to distablise it from the beginning, specifically recruiting a minor, little known race called the Xindi and manipulating them to create a weapon to destroy humanity, the species most responsible for the creation of the Federation. However, they were exposed and stopped by the Enterprise NX-01.
However, the Sphere Builders have not given up their plans, determined to "take back" the Galaxy that they saw as "rightfully theirs", they have manipulated a race called the Cree'tal into creating a powerful biological weapon to wipe out all of the Preservers original creations.
